Decadent, delicious, fruity, or flavoured… from four tiered formal confections to cupcakes and croquembouche, when it comes to choosing your wedding cake, your options are virtually limitless. Your wedding cake is one of the highlights of your reception, and as with all your other wedding celebration elements, its design should reflect your theme and incorporate your colour palette. 

If your wedding is to be formal, then a tiered cake simply decorated with an elegant design motif, one that perhaps matches your stationery, would be ideal. For a romantic country wedding, why not top your cake with fresh flowers, and for a picnic theme, delicately iced cupcakes would be divine. Should you choose to go with cup cakes, remeber too that you could still have a small cutting cake for your top tier.

And what flavour will your cake be? Just about anything you can imagine! Tangy citrus, fruit, marble, white or dark chocolate mud, tiramisu, coffee, carrot, strawberry, raspberry, jaffa… And if you can’t decide, you could always opt for a tiered cake with different flavours on each tier. Wedding cake fillings and icing have become as exotic as cake flavours, with buttercream, ganache, marscapone, fruit spreads, fresh whipped cream and glacĂ© icing proving to be popular choices amongst brides-to-be. If you aren’t big fans of cake, you could opt for the new take on cheese cake: layers of cheeses arranged in tiers and decorated with flowers, fruit and other pretty elements.

No matter what the style or flavour of cake you choose, a cake topper will add a delightful finishing touch. Your topper could be fresh or sugar flowers, a figurine, monogram, bunting… whatever reflects your wedding theme and your style as a couple.

And did you know that many couples now opt to have their cake served as a dessert. If you decide to do this and your cake is tiered, you can still follow tradition and save the top tier for your first anniversary celebration.
