Thousands of couples around the world are tying the knot today on 12-12-12, a once in a century wedding date. The date 12-12-12 is set to become the anniversary for many newlyweds specifically in New South Wales, with a record number of couples due to tie the knot today.

According to The West Australian, over 120 couples have signed up to get married today at the Births, Deaths and Marriages registries in Sydney, Parramatta, Wollongong and Newcastle. The date has also proved popular for non-registry weddings.

Last year there were 967 marriages recorded on Remembrance Day 11-11-11. Not only was this a special date numerically, but also holds great significance for many Australians, marking the day each year that we observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in wars and armed conflicts.

12-12-12 follows the trend of sequential numbers for popular and unique wedding dates, like 10-10-10, 11-11-11, and 10-11-12. There was 11-11-11 (a Friday), 1-1-11 (a Saturday), 10-10-10 (a Sunday), and a range of others. This year's special date falls on a Wednesday, quite an odd day of the week to hold a wedding, although proving not to have deterred many couples in Australia and abroad.

It is believed by some that the symmetry of 12-12-12 will bring good luck to their marriage. 12/12/12 has also proved popular as it is an easy date to remember (a plus for the groom!).

Best of well and well wishes to all the brides getting married today, on this special, once in a lifetime date!
