As part of a new feature on The Bride's Diary Blog, we will be introducing you to individuals who work in the wedding industry... giving you an insight into who they are and why they love weddings!
This week we have been chatting to Cara, owner and creative designer at Invitation Station. Cara gave us an insight into her creative side and why she can't get enough of creating gorgeous stationery suites for brides and grooms!
• Tell us a little about your business…
We are a boutique invitation business specialising in custom made invitations. No two invitations are the same and we don’t sit you down in front of a book. The idea of Invitation Station is to make sure a stationery suite is created to each couple - that a unique story is told and allowed to unfold.
• What is your role in the business and why are you passionate about it?
I am the owner/creative designer at Invitation Station. I am passionate about all things paper and all things not paper too! I love to design…I am passionate about making something creative out of items that most people may disregard…
• How long have you been working in the industry?
Invitation Station has been in the wedding industry for over ten years and counting…
• What are some of your past business experiences?
I started out as the Queenlsand Promotons Co-ordinator for a national company representing large corporations and their new brands. We dreamed up scenarios to announce any new products from ice-cream, perfumes, water, soft-drinks, new venues and sporting events. It was a wonderful place to allow my mind to go crazy with ideas and ways to make people go ‘wow’…and has enabled me to carry this experience over in to the wedding industry.
• What is one of your favourite recollections from your business?
Myself and a few other suppliers were invited to share the wedding of a wonderful couple who were married recently. The wedding was intimate and beautiful and we have carried forward with a wonderful friendship. It is always so lovely to get to know each couple and to click with them in such a way that working in a shop instead of a studio wouldn’t allow. And to be held in high regard to join a small group of people on such an important day in their lives was humbling.
• Tell us a bit about your family and home life…
I have a wonderful husband and two children (9 and 11, boy and girl). While my husband would prefer a clutter free lifestyle unfortunately my creative mind does not allow for such a thing – I am a terrible hoarder and seem to have passed these genes along to my children. We often get creative together on the spur of the moment…me and the children that is…and it takes an outsider to go through my ‘treasured keepsakes’ to work out what I should keep and what I should get rid of – I hate to part with anything! As my work is quite demanding I make sure that we have planned holidays away. It is imperative when work is so close to home (literally a door away), as it is too easy to sneak into the studio with the thought of being creative in mind and then getting caught up in work itself. Family is very important so finding a balance between work and play, although challenging at times is something I have to constantly work at…but it comes with the wonderful reward of seeing my children smile.
• How do you enjoy spending your spare time?
Spare time? Well that doesn’t exist much when running a business and family…but I do enjoy reading a lot and surfing the net. I find reading probably the best escape, as otherwise it comes back to the creative note…I end up playing with papers and all sorts of things and then my idea snowballs so I have to be careful my spare time doesn’t become work time. Yep a good book and snuggled in bed or down at the local café is a great way to unwind.
• What is your most memorable life experience?
My children. Carrying and giving birth to my two adorable children, although it may sound cliché, is definitely my most defining moment.
• What are your plans for the future?
Invitation Station has grown steadily each year, and we have now branched into a wholesale side. There are plans to launch brand products in the near future….so keep an eye out!
